With bluebird skies and a slight breeze, over 1,200 runners took off along the Platte River on a flat and fast out-and-back style course.

The men’s 10 mile race saw Frosty’s Frozen 10 Mile champion Tristan Mitchell take top honors once again in 55:25. Second place finisher Ryan Herzog of Broomfield finished up in 56:54 and 26-year old Christopher Desilets rounded out the top three in 57:41.

Denver’s Kelsey Martin finished first in the women’s 10 mile race with a finishing time of 1:03:49. Team Alchemy’s Nicole Chyr of Englewood finished up in second in 1:04:38, and 42-year old Joanna Zeiger of Boulder finished in 1:06:33, good for third place honors.

The men’s 5 mile race saw 24-year old Kyle O’Brien from Boulder take top honors in a speedy 26:37 finishing time. 46-year old Simon Gutierrez of Colorado Springs grabbed second in 27:14, with fellow masters competitor and Team Alchemy athlete Robert Weiner, 47 of Evergreen finish a close third in 27:16.

In the women’s 5 mile, Henderson, CO’s Lori Walker lead wire-to-wire for a first place finish in 30:10. 22-year old Betsy Flood of Boulder finished second in 31:08 and 45-year old Christine Adamowski of Evergreen rounded out the top three in 32:17.

While the Winter Distance Series is wrapping up its 2012-2013 season, that only means one thing: Spring is on its way! And with that comes Colorado Runner’s next event: the Greenland Trail Races – 8M, 25K and 50K races that take place at the beautiful Greenland Open Space in Larkspur, CO. Check out http://greenland50k.com/ for more information.

Thousands of participants gathered at Hudson Gardens in Littleton on Saturday for the second event of Colorado Runner’s Winter Distance Series. In picture perfect weather, runners and walkers alike took to the South Platte River trail for the Frosty’s (not-so) Frozen Five and Ten Mile. The glorious weather and pristine conditions made for a great race and some blazing finishing times.

In the men’s ten mile event, 27-year old Tristan Mitchell of Centennial knocked out his competition with a 56:20 finishing time. Second place finisher Christopher Desilets of Denver finished up in 58:23 and fellow Denverite Marc Middlekauff, 37, grabbed third in 1:00:16.

The women’s ten miler saw newly-crowned Trail Runner of the Year Kim Dobson take top honors as she not only finished fourth overall, but set a new course record time of 1:02:00. Team Alchemy’s Nicole Chyr wasn’t far behind as she crossed the finish line in second in 1:04:07. Rounding out the top three was 23-year old Christine O’Gorman from Westminster in 1:09:23.

The finish in the men’s 5 mile event was rather close, as Cheyenne, WY’s Mark Arnold nabbed first in 26:14 with Colorado Springs’ Adam Rich hot on his heels, finishing second in 26:45. Justin Daerr of Boulder rounded out the top three in 27:36.

The only event that saw a new record posted was in the women’s five miler. No surprise here, as Heather Utrata broke her own 2012 event record, finishing up in 30:12. Coming in second was a friendly face in Runners Roost’s Bridget Tschappat who crossed the line in 31:28. Shannon Kinney of Boulder finished third in 31:52.

We can only hope that the weather will be as nice for the third Winter Distance Series event coming up on February 16th – the Snowman Stampede 5M/10M!

The first event in Colorado Runner’s Winter Distance Series kicked off on Saturday with the Santa Stampede 10K and 5K (formerly Rudolph’s Revenge). Taking place at Hudson Gardens in Littleton, the event saw record numbers of over 1,300 participants in both events. With clear – albeit chilly – weather conditions, the course was clear and fast, leading to some new course records and blazing finishing times.

In the men’s 10K event, Colorado elite runner Chris Siemers smashed the event record by several minutes. The 31-year old Arvada resident finished the race in 31:24. What’s impressive about the second and third place finishers, Charles Hillig and Tristan Mitchell, is that they too finished under previous event record times. Hillig finished second in 31:30, only 6 seconds behind Siemers, and Mitchell finished up in third in 33:47.

In the women’s 10K race, 36-year old Bridget Tschappat from Highlands Ranch took top honors in 38:57. Second place female Shannon Kinney from Boulder finished up in 39:12, and 39-year old Connilee Walter from Colorado Springs rounded out the top three with a time of 40:24.

The 5K event saw some speedy finishing times as well, with men’s winner Adam Rich just missing out on the course record by a mere 5 seconds. Rich finished up in 15:55 while Boulder resident Bobby Reyes came in second in 16:38. 22-year old Joseph Negreann rounded out the top three with a 17:05 finishing time.

Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Leslie Luna dominated the women’s field in the 5K and set new event and course records by over a minute. Luna’s finishing time of 17:50 was a minute ahead of second place finisher and top Colorado runner Sarah Pizzo’s 18:54 finishing time. Third place belonged to Nicole Mericle of Boulder who finished just behind Pizzo in 19:12.

Despite the chilly weather, participants enjoyed a stocked vendor area with post-race food and hot chocolate and coffee. The athletes that competed in this first event in the Winter Distance Series have definitely set the bar high, as events two and three – Frosty’s Frozen Five & Ten as well as the Snowman Stampede 5M/10M – are next in the series. Both events will also take place at Hudson Gardens and are expected to be just as successful as Saturday’s race.

Each race offers a party-like atmosphere with flat and fast courses along the banks of the scenic South Platte River.

About BoldRunning
BoldRunning offers high quality coaching and an intimate group training environment at a great value to members. Members meet among training groups in Littleton, Denver, and Boulder.

Head Coach and elite runner Ewen North has a Masters Degree in Exercise Science, and has coached thousands of runners through coaching with Adams State College, the University of Nebraska, and since 2005 as director of BoldRunning. “Our idea of Winter Training is to help people build or maintain fitness over the holidays while providing motivation through regular racing. The Winter Distance Series falls at perfect intervals on the calendar with this in mind. Training emphasis is on the aerobic side, but our weekly harder workouts keep the pace high enough to enable racing at any time.”

Training schedule co-writer Mark Plaatjes is a world-renowned runner who held the Marathon World Champion title in 1993 and has won over 20 major marathons. Today Mark continues to run non-competitively and is the co-owner of Boulder Running Company as well as being a physical therapist at and owner of In Motion Rehabilitation in Boulder.
Go to www.bold-running.com to join the group today. The winter training program starts December 3. Members will receive a special discount into the Winter Distance Series.
