The final installment of Colorado Runner’s Winter Distance Series culminated at Hudson Gardens on Saturday with the Snowman Stampede 5 Miler and 10 Miler. Almost 1,000 participants crossed the finish line, leading to an event record since the event’s inception in 2006. Weather conditions were pristine with temperatures in the 20′s and 30′s and the sun shining bright. Saturday’s race boasted some course and event records, drawing former Olympians and International distance runners alike.

In the men’s 5 Mile race, Matt Tebo came away with the win and course record in 25:18. Second place finisher Curtis Begley Jr. finished in 25:40 and third place Adam Rich crossed the line in 26:04.

The women’s 5 Mile race was heavily stocked with stiff competition. Elite British long-distance runner Susan Partridge grabbed the win, course and event record in 28:21, finishing eighth overall. Former Olympian Kathy Butler came in second in 30:13 with third place finisher Jocelyn Petrella crossing the line in 31:08.

The 10 Mile race was equally exciting as the 5 Mile, with men’s winner Ewen North finishing in 55:08. Second and third place finishers Michael Lovato and Andrew Knutsen weren’t far behind, finishing in 55:51 and 56:17, respectively.

In the women’s race, Runners Roost Athlete Heather Utrata continued her winning streak and total domination of the podium with win #5 of the 2012 season. Utrata took the win in 1:02:42. Second and third place finishers Sarah Pizzo and Linnabah Snyder crossed the line in 1:03:06 and 1:03:26, respectively.

Rich, Utrata Win 2012 Frosty’s Frozen 5 Mile – Simpson, Tschappat Win 10 Mile

With temperatures hovering in the low to mid 40′s on Saturday morning, runners toed the line for Frosty’s Frozen 5 and 10 Miler. Playing host to Road Runners Club of America’s 5 mile championship race, runners were treated to a fast course that lead to some fast times, including course records in both the men and women’s race. Adam Rich took the win and course record in 25:37, with Kenneth Foster and Bobby Reyes coming in second and third in 26:14 and 27:17, respectively. In the women’s race, Rock N Roll Denver Marathon winner Heather Utrata finished first with a new course record of 30:17. Second belonged to Sarah Pizzo, who finished in 30:45, and finishing in a close third was Linnabah Snyder in 30:49.

While the clouds parted and the sun did start to shine at the start of the 10 Miler, the winds began to pick up on the course at Hudson Gardens. That didn’t stop men’s winner Jason Simpson to post what race director Derek Griffiths called a “stupid fast time” of 53:46. Coming in almost 5 minutes later was second place Andrew Knutsen in 58:02, with third place Dan Edstrom finishing in 59:14. The women’s race was closer than the men’s, with Bridget Tschappat taking the win in 1:07:32, and second and third place finishers Deborah Seaman-Gregory and Erin Cunningham finishing in 1:08:59 and 1:10:27, respectively. This year’s race drew record numbers, resulting in an excitingly fun and competitive second installment to Colorado Runner’s Winter Distance Series.

Records Fall at 2011 Rudolph’s Revenge

Records were breaking left and right on Saturday at the 7th Annual Rudolph’s Revenge 5k and 10k. With a record number of 1,163 finishers, the early morning chilly temperatures didn’t stop runners from coming out to Hudson Gardens in Littleton and posting some fast times. Greg Reindl took home the men’s 5k title in a record time of 15:50. Second place belonged to Kenneth Foster who came in at 16:34, with third place finisher and professional triathlete Michael Lovato finishing in 17:00. Michael’s wife Amanda Lovato, also a professional triathlete, took home the women’s 5k title in a record time of 18:51. Second and third place female finishers Linnabah Snyder and Bridget Tschappat came in at 19:09 and 19:51, respectively. 11-year old Tyler Scholl finished 6th in the men’s race with an impressive time of 17:41, and Tyler’s Mom Stephenie Scholl finished 7th in the women’s race in 21:09.

Start of the Rudolph’s Revenge 5K

The 10k race saw just as impressive finishing times as the 5k, with Olympic runner Roberto Mandje breaking the tape first in the men’s race in 34:18. The race for second and third place was close, with John Sutherland coming in second at 35:22 and Tristan Mitchell hot on his heels coming in third at 35:27. In the women’s 10k race, professional runner and U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program runner Captain Kelly Calway came in with a record time of 36:57. Coming in second was elite top distance runner Paige Higgins in 37:47. Rounding out the top three was Michelle Lines with a third place finishing time of 41:06. It’s clear that Rudolph’s Revenge, part of Colorado Runner’s Winter Distance Series, is becoming one of the most popular Winter races in Colorado – attracting top local athletes and running enthusiasts alike.

Frosty’s Frozen Five Miler and Snowman Stampede 10 Miler Awarded RRCA State Championships

Who is the swiftest runner in the state? Runners can compete for that title on January 21 and again on February 18! Frosty’s Frozen 5 and 10 has been awarded the designation as Colorado’s State Championship 5 Mile race by the Road Runners Club of America. Then, the Snowman Stampede 10 Mile race will crown the RRCA 10 Mile State Champions. Runners from throughout the state can compete to see who the fastest 5 and 10 mile runners are overall and in their respective age groups. The races will take place at Hudson Gardens in Littleton.

About Frosty’s Frozen 5 and the Snowman Stampede

Frosty’s Frozen 5 and the Snowman Stampede are part of the Winter Distance Series, a three-race series that is currently celebrating its sixth year. In addition to enjoying a flat and fast 5 mile and 10 mile race that travels the paved Platte River Trail, runners and walkers will receive a shirt, chip timing, and a party-like atmosphere at the finish with yummy food and drink, including muffins, bagels, and hot chocolate. The three races in the series include Rudolph’s Revenge 5K and 10K on December 17, 2011, the Frosty’s Frozen Five and Ten Milers on January 21, 2012, and the Snowman Stampede 5M and 10M on February 18, 2012. Runners Roost will help the winners of each race celebrate with a new pair of New Balance shoes and they are also giving $20, $15, and $10 gift certificates to first, second, and third place age group winners in every race. The age groups are as follows: 19 and under, and then five year age groups up to 70+.

“Each event in the 2010-2011 Winter Distance Series was a huge success,” said Race Director Derek Griffiths. “Rudolph’s Revenge had more than 1,000 finishers and the other two races had nearly 1,000 registrants. With such large crowds, I don’t want runners to be stressed about picking up their shirts, bib numbers, and timing chips right before the race. Several runners commented that adding the pre-race packet pickup last year was a great idea. Also, it will give runners a chance to pick up any last minute items they may need for the race.”

Runners can also preregister for the Winter Distance Series at all five Denver metro Runners Roost locations. Anyone who registers in store will receive 25% off New Balance gear, including shoes.

It’s difficult to keep training through Colorado’s harsh winters, but the Winter Distance Series helps by motivating thousands of runners to keep moving. The series offers three events in Littleton. The first race is the Rudolph’s Revenge 5K and 10K on December 17, followed by the Frosty’s Frozen 5 and 10 Miler on January 21, and then the Snowman Stampede 5 and 10 Miler on February 18. The Winter Distance Series Partners with the Fetal Hope Foundation

The Winter Distance Series is once again partnering with the Fetal Hope Foundation for a series of three running events from December through February in Littleton, Colorado.

The series begins on December 17 with Rudolph’s Revenge 5K and 10K. Next up is Frosty’s Frozen Five and Ten mile races on January 21. The final race is the Snowman Stampede, which offers five and ten mile races on February 18. All three events take place at Hudson Gardens with the shortest race kicking off at 9 a.m. and the longer event starting at 10:15 a.m. Both runners and walkers are welcome.

“Last year we welcomed record crowds to the series events,” said Derek Griffiths, race director. “We had over 1,000 finishers at the first race and 1,000 registrants at the other two. Currently, registration is on record pace for the seventh year of the series, which means we will be able to make an even bigger impact in the community.”

The Fetal Hope Foundation’s mission is to provide support, information, fund research, increase awareness and be an outlet for leading medical information pertaining to fetal distresses and syndromes. Aligned with some of the world’s leading fetal medicine centers, Fetal Hope has been organized to provide accurate and factual information for families dealing with syndromes such as Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome and Acardiac Twinning.

The series is sponsored by the Runners Roost, New Balance, Coda Coffee, the Melting Pot and Colorado Runner Magazine.
